The Kerala Forest Department granted authorization and a license for the disposal of foreign soil and the construction of sets for filming the Malayalam movie Unda featuring Mammootty in 2018. A legal petition has been filed seeking action regarding environmental protection, including prosecution against the Unda film’s producers for creating ecological harm while filming in a protected forest region.
The Kerala High Court ordered measures against negligent forest officials and filmmakers for the environmental harm caused in the reserve forest of Mulleria in Kasargod, where filming took place. According to the petition, the crew caused damage to the forest’s microflora and fauna by dumping gravel, which rendered the area marshy.
The Court instructed the Central Government to take measures against the officials and the film company after conducting proper inquiries for engaging in non-forest activities within the reserve forest area, such as depositing gravel and harming the environment, biodiversity, and local flora and fauna.
As a result, the Central Government established a four-member commission to examine the situation and penalize the wrongdoers.
The commission came to the conclusion that the forest had not been harmed and produced a report that appeared to protect the criminals. The High Court’s findings, which sought to protect the bureaucrats and wealthy producers, ran counter to this study. This report was in conflict with the conclusions of the High Court, which aimed to shield the bureaucrats and affluent producers.
