Nilambur, Karulai: months old elephant calf drifted in the Karimpuzha river, and the local people rescued and handed it over to the forest officials. The forest officials claimed that the calf had reunited with its mother elephant. but they were preparing to take the baby to the Rehabilitation Centre at Kottoor.
The shrewd officials determined to kidnap the calf to the rehabilitation center under the pretext of the health of the calf was deteriorating and not taking any food.
We have submitted a complaint directly to the Director General of Police and various high forest officials to reunite the calf and stop kidnapping elephant calves for entertainment for tourists. The calf died after a few months at the Elephant Rehabilitation Centre, Kottoor. It caused an uproar and public outcry.
